Halftime of February
Good Afternoon,
This week as a class we came back to the mission statement that the students helped co-create at the beginning of the school year. It emphasizes responsibility, respect, kindness, safety, and living out the 7 daily habits. We try to be the best version of ourselves every day, and when we can all have that mindset, as well as living out the mission statement daily it sets everyone up for success. As we reach a point in the year right now where it feels like the days are long in winter this was a great reminder for us all as we gear up for the last part of February.
Week in Review:
Leader in Me: This week we learned about honesty and talking straight with kindness. Talking straight is a key behavior we use to build high trust. Invite your learner to teach you more about the high trust behavior of straight talk.
Writing: Writers worked on free writing this week as they completed their second informational on the American Revolution. As they were free writing, they were writing about ideas that they had about research they did, and used prompts to help push their thinking to lead to new discoveries and hypotheses'.
Math: Mathematicians this week saw themselves being able to identify, draw, compare, analyze and classify angles. Students studied angles in isolation as well as those in two-dimensional figures. They used two very basic benchmarks—the 90° right angle and the 180° straight angle—to determine the measure of the interior angles in each of the pattern blocks. The pattern blocks then served as a tool for checking their work as they moved into measuring and sketching angles with a 180° protractor.
Reading: In our final week studying the American Revolution, students worked on developing a deeper knowledge of content related vocabulary. Also, questioning and hypothesizing to reach deeper conclusions, and that we can read History for universal messages, for meaning just like we do with fiction books.
Content: Students learned about the connection between sounds and vibration. Students looked at how telephones using cups and string could demonstrate this connection Students then thought of a design of the telephones using different types of supplies to see if they can improve the sound quality.
