February, Straight Ahead!

Good Afternoon,

As we embark on a new month, and second half of the school year I hope everyone is excited for what this group of 4th graders have on the horizon. As they enter their last semester here at NDLC I will do everything I can to help ensure they can make as much growth as possible academically and socially, so that when their time at NDLC comes to an end they feel empowered to take on whatever their future has for the,. We will continue to celebrate the positives, learn from our mistakes, and continue to find joy in the process of the daily learning of being together because it will go by fast.

Week in Review:

Leader in Me: We learned about the importance of planning our week. We considered our most important roles, activities, and responsibilities (Big Rocks) and added them to a weekly calendar. Work together to brainstorm a list of strategies to keep your family on track with your most important activities this week.

Writing: Writers began their second informational book connected to their research on the American Revolution. They chose a different focused topic, and will go through the writing process with greater independence where they are deciding the sections of their books, and what genre they want each section to be written.

Math: We began our week studying measurement in terms of time, liquid volume, and mass amounts. Then the end of the week we looked at data analysis, where we can organize data into a table then they were able to apply their measuring skills they just worked on in a new context.

Reading: Readers continued their research, but now on their new focused topic they chose in writing. We ended our week where the 4th graders decided which side they wanted to be in for our debate we will have on Monday. We will recreate the scene at the 2nd Continental Congress of whether they want to defend the Colonies and be a Patriot to break free from Great Britain or want to defend Great Britain and be a Loyalist to remain loyal subjects of the King. Ask your child which side they chose, and for some reasons why they want to be a Patriot or a Loyalist.

Content: Students learned about the types, causes, and dangers of landslides. In the activity, students were faced with the engineering problems of protecting a house from a landslide and preventing a landslide from happening. They used brainstorming techniques to design creative solutions.

A Look Ahead:

  • Project Prom - February 5th-9th
    • NDLC will be collecting NEW makeup for the Community Clothes Closet Prom Event! Each year they help make prom special for teens around the area by providing dresses, accessories, and makeup. The most desired makeup items are: bronzer, highlighters, mascara, eyeliner, brow liner, nail polish, and eye shadow.
  • February 19th - No School
  • Tuesday, March 26th, 2024 - 4th Grade Field Trip to Madison
    • Will send email when permission slips are sent home. I have a running document from earlier this year of people who were interested in chaperoning for this field trip.

That's all for this week!

Have a great weekend!

Mr. VW
