Welcome to May!

Good Afternoon,

As we head into our final full month of the school we lots of school events to look forward too which is sure to bring lots of joy and excitement. With that the finality of the school year can bring lots of bittersweet feelings for a lot of people as the end of the 4th Grade year means the end of students journey's at NDLC. A conversation I had with a student today reflected that exact thinking when they shared how they are feeling sad about the end of the year because they know it means the end of their schooling at NDLC, and so making sure to honor everyone's feelings while making the most of everyday because they will be gone before we know it.

Week in Review:

Leader in Me: This week, we talked  about how to Sharpen the Saw. Sharpen the Saw includes having balance in our body, mind, heart, and spirit. Discuss these questions with your learner:  What can you do as a family to help others and sharpen your spirit? What new foods can you try to sharpen your body? How can you build and strengthen a relationship to sharpen the heart? What is something new you can learn as a family to sharpen your mind?

Writing: Writers worked on revising their realistic fiction stories. Some skills that writers included in their revision work was orienting their readers with setting, and writing powerful endings that reveal a lesson while also tying up any loose ends.

Math: Mathematicians compared fractions with unlike denominators, fractions related to line plots, and began to relate and explore fractions and decimals!

Reading: Readers are building strong interpretations in their historical fiction books, and began to turn to some primary sources to deepen their understanding of the topics and time periods that are in their books. We ended the week exploring the idea that some people’s perspective is not all peoples perspectives, and how that applies to more than just our books but our lives!

Content: Students were introduced to electricity as a form of energy.  Students investigate how electrical energy requires a circuit. Along the way, they learned about the anatomy of a battery, begin to see how circuits work, and discover how handy an on-off switch can be.

A Look Ahead:

That's all for this week!
Have a Great Weekend!

Mr. VW
