The End of April

Good Afternoon,

As we close the chapter on the month of April, it begins anew with the month of May next week. With that can bring the reality of the end of the 4th Grade and time at NDLC for students. We have different things we are currently finalizing in terms of end of year events, and we will send a communication out next week in terms of dates, times, and specifics for those items. With that being said, students have been really doing an excellent job of staying in tune to their learning, and our class goal we had set this week of growing in reading by the end of the year was met with a 98% success rate of students doing their lead measures (strategies that help us reach our goals) in order to accomplish their WIG.

Week in Review:

Leader in Me: This week, we learned about stress. Eustress is positive stress that feels exciting, can motivate us, and is short-term. Distress is negative, toxic stress that causes anxiety or concern, feels unpleasant, and can lead to health problems. Invite your learner to teach you about the differences between eustress and distress. Discuss ways you can support your learner if experiencing distress.

Writing: Writers began drafting their realistic fiction stories. Writers took their planning, and put it into action with an emphasis on each scene being its own small moment within the story which forces us to really get in tune with the details that bring stories to life.

Math: This week we focused on fractions comparing them to each other with same size wholes and different sized wholes. We also learned about equivalent fractions when using multiplication and division.

Reading: Readers are building strong interpretations in their historical fiction book clubs, and the conversations have been very powerful. They have been doing an excellent job of pushing their thinking, and attending to lots of different ideas that are taking place in the books they are reading.

Content: Students explored how high the hills of a roller coaster can be, and students constructed an explanation of how energy is stored, released, and transferred in chain reactions, such as falling dominoes.

A Look Ahead:

  • Tuesday, May 9th - District Art Show
  • Tuesday, May 16th - Family Night
  • Wednesday, May 24th - 4th Grade Concert
  • Friday, May 26th - Early Dismissal
  • Monday, May 29th - No School
Look for a communication next week on finalized dates/events for 4th Graders!

Have a great weekend!

Mr. VW
