Freezing into February

 Good Afternoon,

The students persevered through this bitterly cold week that had them inside for much of the week not being able to get outside for recess. Although some liked the idea of being able to stay inside, all in all they were able to "get through" the week without having the chance to run around, and enjoy some fresh air. We are deep into our reading, and writing units where students are gaining great independence being champions of their learning, and they finished up another math unit this past week. The students seemed poised to take on the final 4 months of the school year with great enthusiasm and excitement to be great everyday.

Week in Review:

Leader in Me: Our class talked about being loyal to the absent. Ask your child, “What does it mean to ‘be loyal to the absent’?”

Writing: Writers are finishing up their second informational book, but this book they have taken on just a chapter with an emphasis on included various text features that are found in the nonfiction books they read. The collaboration amongst writers in their groups has been awesome to watch as they are all working together towards their 'publication' of their research topics.

Math: Mathematicians got a chance to showcase their knowledge on their latest unit test. The concepts of measurement in both metric and customary systems, being able to make conversions, and understanding area and perimeter were main focuses. The students did an excellent job, and they will be coming home to show how they did!

Reading: Readers have begun researching on a different extreme weather or natural disaster topic. They are working on comparing and contrasting their previous research to the new learning they are discovering. We are also coming to books with our own agendas, having our own questions and ideas in mind that we would like to get answered rather than just letting the book dictate all of our thinking and learning.

Content: Researchers continued their learning on the Colonial America and the Path to Revolutionary War through their own discovery, and research. They focused around the conflicts that began to happen in the 1600s between English settlers and Native Americans, and focused on 3 key events of Pequot War, King Philip's War, and Bacon's Rebellion.

A Look Ahead:

  • March 22nd - Madison Field Trip. Some have expressed interest in chaperoning, and if you are feel free to reach out. Permission slips will be sent home in a few weeks once all logistics of our day have been finalized, but right now the plan is to leave NDLC a little before 8:00 A.M. and return at 4:30 P.M.
  • Friday, February 10th - 100th Day of school (Students are able to dress up)
  • Valentines Day - Students will be sent home with a class list today should they want to exchange Valentines
  • No School - February 17th and 20th

That's all for this week! Enjoy your weekend!

Mr. VW
